Prayers for You

Healing from Guilt, Shame, and Regret

Have you ever wished there was a re-do button for your life? That you could rewind parts of your life, and make different choices?

Hanging onto guilt, shame, or regret can weigh us down, and rob us of confidence in God’s love and purpose for our life. If you feel bad about yourself because of your past actions, you may feel unqualified to help others – which is exactly WHY the enemy tries to convince you that your past makes you unlovable.

The enemy (the devil, who is also known as the Accuser in Revelation 12:10) is the heart of “the critical spirit.” This means that he criticizes you all day long, and also entices you to criticize others. All of these accusations create rampways for the devil to control you (Ephesians 4:26).

People who have a “critical spirit” are constantly finding fault in others, and in themselves. They are perfectionistic, and have standards that no one could achieve.

Instead of being vigilant in finding fault in yourself or others, scripture reminds us to be vigilantly watchful so that the enemy doesn’t control us (1 Peter 5:8).

And praise God that he has a plan for us to be relieved of our burdens, through prayer and believing in Jesus to save us.

This means telling God about everything that’s in your heart. Even dropping to your knees to express your sorrow at past mistakes, and asking for his forgiveness. Since God already knows everything about you (Hebrews 4:13), there are no secrets from him. So your prayers are for his forgiveness, and for his Spirit to teach you why you took those past actions, and how to avoid them in the future.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 ESV

When I was in the new age movement, I thought that the word “sin” was a cuss word. If someone said I sinned, I thought they were calling me a bad person. I didn’t realize then that we’ve all sinned! (Romans 3:23) Somehow, knowing that I’m in good company with the whole human race helped me to get comfortable with the term, sin.

But then, what do you do with the sin you’ve amassed? Well, you first bring it to God in prayer. You confess the wrong-doings to him, with a truly contrite (remorseful) heart. You pray for God to forgive you, and to lift you up.

Then you keep praying, especially if the devil starts to slap you around with guilt. The devil (aka the accuser) tries to convince you that you’re permanently damaged by your past actions. Don’t believe him! Like the story of the prodigal son, God welcomes us prodigal daughters and sons back with open arms.

After all, look at how God forgave the Apostle Paul, even after Paul was involved with killing Christians! And how Jesus forgave the criminal on the cross who believed in him and said, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43 NLT).

Apostle Paul is also an example of how God can use our past mistakes to create glory for his kingdom! Pray that God uses you to help others, and that you can teach others based upon what you’ve learned from your past.

Forgiveness from God doesn’t give us a license to keep sinning, of course. Once we are saved, we are motivated to live godly lives.

So the next time the devil tries to remind you of your past to pull you down with guilt, remind the devil of his future: God wins! (Matthew 25:41 and Revelation 20:10).

Here’s a powerful prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I praise you and thank you for your wonders of creation, and for the magnificence of your love and mercy. I come before you today in the name of your son, Jesus of Nazareth, to ask for your forgiveness for (describe whatever is weighing you down). Please forgive me! I pray that your Holy Spirit will show me why I engaged in these actions, and show me to a better way for today and my future. Thank you for your forgiveness and love. Thank you for your mercy and grace. Thank you for saving me for eternal life with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

And remember the promise of Romans 10:9-10

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

  3. Hi Doreen,
I studied with you in 2004 in Kona and in Laguna Beach. I’ve listened to you talk about Jesus this past year and at first, had doubts. But, Jesus came to me on March 1st 2018. I didn’t see Him but heard His voice clearly. He came to me during 50 days and dictated a book to me about “The Way”. He urged me to talk about Him and so I have started a “Soulful Sunday” Facebook LIVE where I share His messages weekly. It was not an easy decision to come out of the “closet” and speak so openly about Him as I am sure you understand. But like you, I could not refuse “The Call”. I admire you for being such an adamant follower of Jesus and for your integrity towards Him. I would love to speak to you personally about this if you feel inclined. Thank you so much for leading the way and for being such a great example no matter the cost. Your reward will be in Heaven. Lucinda Gabriel

  4. I have made so many mistakes in my life and tried to walk my own way. The results haven’t been the best and I had to go through a lot of pain. I still struggle with my faith because I have been of the path. Thank you for the praying 🙏🏼 I love your new way to help us through God’s love 💕 and wisdom. God bless you.

  5. Thank you, dear Jesus for your mercies, especially providing us with the wonderful example of your cherished one, Doreen Virtue, as a modern day “preacher” of the truth of Your Word. I pray you bless her, and us, with an outpouring of your Holy Spirit, so that we may know how and when to speak of your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth. We know that you desire that none be lost, and we humbly ask that all our cherished loved ones will come to know the peace that passes all understanding. Thank you!

  7. Glory to you Doreen for standing for Jesus…I followed you in the new age but found there was still an emptiness no matter what I did to be the best I could be and found life was not responding to my efforts. I was baptized on April 8 and have not looked back. I love your testament to our Savior Jesus…Roman 14:11 The other day my friend was at Starbucks and took a photo of large wall letters for purchased “JESUS” so yes “every knee will bow and every tongue shall confess to God”

Bless you be my Christian Sister

    Regards, Ivana.

  12. Thank you so much for that . It was exactly what I needed to read. Sometimes you do not realise how under attack you are until you feel the heavy weight of your own shame and clock that constant critical inner voice.

  13. This is such a wonderful blog. This topic is something I was afraid of when I decided to follow the Christian path.

Now I know better. God forgives and heals! 😊

    Thanks Doreen!

  14. Hi Doreen,

This message couldn’t have come at a better time. I am glad to stumble upon this blog. I have recently re-dedicated my Life to the Lord after spending almost a decade in the New Age Community. After careful consideration and much internal dialogue, I have found it in the best interest of my family and our future to let go of this aspect of my Life, mainly since it is not producing the “positivism” it claims but more or less creating more judgmental criticism.

Something I found a lot less when I was with Jesus in my Christian faith. Therefore, I felt a calling back to my roots, and I’ve followed. It was as if Jesus was knocking at my door.

    Revelations 3:20
    New Living Translation
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

I am a friend of God, and always have been. It was time for me to go home. 🙂

I appreciate the scriptures that you included as well.
    Happy belated Mothers Day!
    Thank you.

  15. Dear Doreen,
I have been praying to Our Lord Jesus Christ everyday for the last month asking for forgiveness for failing in so many aspects of my life. I want to have His help, to live a better life, to help people and myself be better. And to feel loved because I have never felt loved. Thank you Doreen for inspiring me to be open. Norma

  16. I praise God for showing me, through you, that I have been allowing the accuser to use me, to stay muddled in my own criticism of myself and others. PRAISE GOD FOR FORGIVENESS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST!!! I love you dear sister!

  17. Very helpful. I wound up here after seeing your interview with Steve Bancarz on Youtube, where you mentioned self-loathing. You made a few comments that really resonated with me.
Hearing your testimony, I respect that you were willing to walk away from a more affluent lifestyle to where you are now.

I just wanted to encourage you with a verse about those who lead others to God:

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
    (Dan 12:3)
